Therapeutic Tip Tuesday: Expectations

Lately I have been talking to clients about expectations. I am trying to gt them to understand that expectations go both ways. In relationships you have to give your expectations of the other person as well as inform them of what they can expect from you. When I ask clients to write down what others can expect from them they become quite stumbled. “What do you mean, expect from me?” It really challenges parents that bring their children for family sessions because the issue to them is always the child. The first assignment is always about expectations.

So, your Tuesday therapeutic tip is discussing expectations. Here are a few points to remember:

  1. Start with what others can expect from you. If you start with what you expect from them your list will change a great deal when you talk about yourself.
  2. Be realistic. Expectations should not be farfetched and not be something you have never seen or heard of before.
  3. Distinguish between expectations and ambitions. Is your expectation actually a want?
  4. Be receptive to the other person’s expectations. This is not just about what you want and what you will do. They have expectations to.

I hope this weekly therapeutic tip helps. Remember this tip can be utilized in all relationships including couples, parent and children, friends and employees.

Happy Tuesday!
